What I Just Finished Reading

Mermaid Moon – Susann Cokal
Lovely from start to finish. Cokal is the rare author who can sustain a fairytale, in fairytale language, over the length of a novel. This one has found a permanent place on my bookshelf.

What I Am Currently Reading

Ka – John Crowley
Crowley’s books are fascinating, and Ka, the story of a corvine psychopomp and his human companions through the ages, is no exception. But man, they take a lot of energy to read.

Women of the Golden Dawn – Mary K. Greer
The women’s empowerment vocabulary of 1995, when this volume published, is dated today, but it’s nice to have a biography that covers the Golden Dawn’s women for a change.

In Search of Buddha’s Daughters – Christine Toomey
This week’s chapter (two) focuses on the controversy surrounding the ordination of nuns in Tibetan Buddhism. It’s interesting—if frustrating—reading.

おまけのこ – 畠中 恵 (Omake no Ko – Hatakenaka Megumi)
This volume of the Shabake series opens with our hero Ichitaro bedridden, although not, this time, from his ailments. Rather he’s been in an epic fight with his childhood friend over his having spoken aloud a trivial —and true—observation about Eikichi that the series’ characters have been making privately throughout the past three novels. It’s all very Japanese, but I’ve been in the mood for jidai shosetsu recently, so here we are.
