What I Just Finished Reading
Outlaws of Sherwood – Robin McKinley
While not my favorite by McKinley, it is in the top half. Without spoiling anything, I appreciate how her Robin Hood owes much of his renown to the combined efforts of Sherwood’s outlaws. He’s not always the star of the show here, which I found made him a more interesting character, and his story more refreshing. I could have done with fewer POV switches—I prefer stories that stick to a single narrator—but understand why McKinley used multiple perspectives here. The dialogue is snappy—sometimes overly uniformly so between characters—but clever and entertaining nonetheless. I will probably give this one another read some day.
The Truth – Terry Pratchett
This is one of my favorites of Pterry’s. The new additions to Discworld: William de Worde, Sacharissa, and Otto von Chriek, are delightful, but this is at heart an ensemble book and Pratchett does a fabulous job bringing in old favorites—Vimes, Angua, the Patrician, Gaspode… I love this series so much.
蟲師 4 – 漆原 友紀 (Mushishi vol. 4 – Urushihara Yuki)
Urushihara really hit his stride with the stories in this volume, which are the strongest of anything he’s written to date.
What I Am Currently Reading
Intermediate Korean – Andrew Sangpil Byon
I’ve made it through chapter 13.
Boys Will Be Boys – Clementine Ford
Still very good, although I have stalled out on reading this due to the following book, which has consumed my life.
Under the Pendulum Sun – Jeannette Ng
This book. This book. THIS BOOK. This is, hands down, the best thing I have read this year. This is the foreboding, gothic fantasy that I desire. Stay tuned for a long, involved review next week when I’ll (hopefully) be better able to put all my feels into coherent form. Because, damn, this book is good.
What I'm Reading Next
My sole acquisition this week was The Emperor’s Blades by Brian Stavely, courtesy of Tor.
