What I Just Finished Reading
鋼の錬金術師27 – 荒川弘 (Fullmetal Alchemist vol. 27 – Arakawa Hiromu)
As good of a conclusion to this series as one could wish for.
What I Am Currently Reading
Tithe – Holly Black
I’d forgotten how brutal (brughtal?) life is underneath Black’s fairy mounds.
Intermediate Korean – Andrew Sangpil Byon
This week’s chapter focuses on ~러, ~려고, and ~면서, which are all grammar points I mastered the first time I encountered them over a decade ago. But in an effort to actually start at the beginning of a textbook and work my way through to the end in an orderly fashion, goddamit, I dutifully commit myself to completing this content.
Smoke and Summons – Charlie Holmberg
Holmberg is a good author and this no slag on her, but reading about her dystopian city state, the draconian government that runs it, and the various species of criminals, magicians, and commoners who inhabit it, I can’t stop thinking about the utterly killer job Sarah Monette does working with the same elements.
Fire Logic – Laurie J. Marks
Marks is a matter-of-fact narrator and I have yet to feel any visceral connection to her characters, but I’m enjoying this book all the same.
The Hidden Life of Trees – Peter Wohlebellen
I read an article about this book in the New York Times way back in 2016 and was saddened that no English translation existed. I’m very happy to be reading one now, and thus far it’s lived up to the promise hinted at in the article.
神隠し– 佐伯泰英 (Kamikakushi – Saeki Yasuhide)
I crapped out on this one with 100 pages to go last summer, and am renewing my push to finish it.
祈る人 – 深井結己 (Inoru Hito – Fukai Yuki)
I love Fukai’s stuff, but stories of lovelorn high school juniors are a lot less immediate to me now than they were when I first dipped my toe in the yaoi pool.
What I'm Reading Next
I’ll keep plugging away at Black, Holmberg, Marks, and Wohlbellen.
これで以上です。
