Happy Halloween!
What I Just Finished Reading
Thelema – Colin D. Campbell
Campbell’s take on Crowley’s life and writings is credulous and uncritical (and at times disingenuous). But taken with a grain of salt, it’s a decent introduction for someone looking for something longer than a Wikipedia article but easily readable within a few days’ time.
Unyong-jon – Michael J. Pettid
Pettid’s translation of this 16th century Korean novel is nicely done, and his introduction, which covers the novel’s history and authorship, its social and political context, and its critique of women’s poor social status is phenomenal.
What I Am Currently Reading
The Tain – Ciaran Carson
I’ve just finished the famed “pillow talk” prologue, and so far Carson’s done an excellent job rendering the story into modern prose, augmented with useful footnotes.
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? – Mindy Kaling
I’ve never seen the US version of The Office, nor did I have any idea who Kaling was before I picked up this book. Perhaps that’s why I’ve stalled out halfway through...not having seen any of the television she’s worked on, I find these sections much less interesting than the earlier chapters on her childhood and post-uni days.
Monstress vol. 1 – Marjorie Liu & Sana Takeda
The first time I read Monstress I just soaked in the gorgeous art and the weirdness of its world. This time around, I can better grasp what an ambitious fantasy world Liu and Takeda are building.

ForYuletide reasons.
What I'm Reading Next
I’ll probably pick DiQuette’s Understanding Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot back up.
