New year, new effort to get back on schedule and I actually budgeted time to type this up ahead of D&D tonight. (Alas, Fandom Snowflake, I'll be taking a rain check on you.)
What I Just Finished Reading
The Shepherd's Crown – Terry Pratchett
Trite and heavy-handed, and penned by a ghostwriter who resorts to italics and exclamation points to make his point in one sentence out of three. I absolutely recommend giving this one a miss.
What I Am Currently Reading
The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue – Mackenzi Lee
What on earth, NPR? One of the best books of 2017!? Did you only read two all year?!?
Spam Nation – Brian Krebs
Krebs' writing is crisp and precise, and thus far he's done an excellent job introducing the main players who will populate this look into the criminal underworld of spam email and bogus pharmaceuticals.
Melusine – Sarah Monette
Proceeding slowly because boy howdy is this dark, but it's well written and compelling and I'm very much enjoying it.
White Sand – Brian Sanderson & Julius Gopez
White Sand was originally Sanderson's unpublished first novel, and one issue in, it shows. The plot is standard “no one realizes how OP the male protagonist is,” but at least the art is gorgeous.
What I'm Reading Next
I'll probably start Dava Sobel's Longitude and continue Eisen and Konchok's The Enlightened Gene.
