Bored and in need of a method of procrastination (which often amounts to the same thing), I took a stroll down to BookOff today. There, I had the pleasure of glancing at one of the Gensousuikoden mangazations. There are several of these for Suikodens I, II, and III. The manga do not appear to be retellings of the games, but rather collections of shorts penned by various famous (I'm assuming) mangaka. Of course, I glanced through the manga for I, looking for my favourite characters (Gremio and Viktor).
The Japanese are so cool. I found a five-page short featuring the hero and Gremio, and occurring some years before the opening of the game. The chapter in question opens with a half naked (!) Gremio singing lustily to himself as he cooks the hero's stew. But things are not as idyllic as they may seem on the surface. Gremio soon notices that the hero has been acting rather secretive recently. This is cause for some concern. The hero is growing up. Gremio does not want him to grow up. This leads to Much Angsting on Gremio's part.
Deciding to investigate, Gremio follows the hero to his room, where he spots the hero looking at something which he hides under his bed as soon as he notices Gremio's presence.
This sends Gremio into fits. The hero is maturing and becoming interested in sex (as opposed to Gremio). But the kicker is what Gremio imagines: namely that the items being hidden beneath the bed pr0n magazines. But not just any old porn. Gremio pictures the hero looking at gay men's porn. Which makes me laugh my pants off, because I am a big fan of the hero/Gremio chan overtones in GSS, and of course (of course of course) the Japanese fans were there waaaaaay ahead of me.
Of course, what the hero was hiding had nothing to do with porn, and the story ended on a very, very sweet note. (Seriously. I cooed. Out loud.) And thus, I will probably be back within the week to buy this manga, like the tool that I am.
