Probably of more autobiographical interest than anything else, but nevertheless, I offer you: Friday: Tokyo or bust!

I actually took time off of work to go to Tokyo a day early. (A filling had fallen out two days before and, due to the state of Japanese smiles in my neck of the woods, I was keen to visit a trusted American dentist. But this is a story for another day.) At any rate, I left town at 6:00 am, was in Tokyo that morning, and wrapped up at the dentist's at about 12:30 - with a whole day stretching ahead of me, although perversely, it was too late to try and make it to Friday's Comiket.

So, never lacking for initiative, I found myself in Shibuya, where I kicked around Tower records (bought some overpriced CDs, because the Prodigy's new album sounds ever so good played at loud volumes on Bose speakers) and tried to remember whether paperbacks are cheaper at Tower or Kinokuniya. (As it happens, they're cheaper at Tower, but Kino has a better selection.)

I postponed the inevitable at Three Minute Happiness (which actually stocks clothing in my size, as well as Dr Pepper! ::love::) and Tsutaya, where I sat transfixed by the trailer for Suikoden IV. Having put completing III on hold until I can finish II, I wasn't sure whether I wanted to spend $80 on another video game when I've still got so many in the wings waiting patiently to be played to their conclusions. Thanks to the good(?) people at Tsutaya, that game plan has changed, and I will most likely be dropping my $80 at the earliest convenience - the animation in IV makes FFX look like South Park. (Of course, it's always easier to fine tune animation than to pioneer it, but still. I was drooling.)

And then, like a homing pigeon, I made my way to Mandarake. I like the Nakano branch much better, but I'd been awake for more than twelve hours at this point, and didn't want to deal with trying to get there. Anyway, Shibuya had a lot of good stuff, including a fair number of Minekura Kazuya's Saiyuki and WA doujinshi. It was fun to look at them in their little museum case, but I opted for the bulk method, and came away with a bunch of FMA and YnM stuff instead (although the cost was probably the same, in the end!).

Then back to the hotel: a 15-minute trip which actually took me closer to 40 while I circled around my stop on the Marunouchi line - headed the wrong way, then overshot my station, then missed getting off, then backtracked again, before heading up and out the wrong exit. (Honestly, this is a journey I've made scads of times before, but I wait for the one time I don't have any reading material to screw up. Go figure.)

[livejournal.com profile] cienna and [livejournal.com profile] takadainmate rolled into town at about 10:30, and we spent a few hours mulling over the Comiket catalogues. There was a small wailing and gnashing of teeth from this corner upon the discovery that Suikoden, FF, and One Piece had already taken place, but as the majority of the stuff I wanted - FMA, YnM, KnMnM, Silver Diamond, LoTR, HP, Saiyuki, PotC (and also ASAP, YMMV, FWIW, and HtH) - was to take place on the morrow, things were pretty much okay. We even managed to find some really obscure fandoms - IWtV, Sandman, and Red Dwarf.

And then it was off to bed for us, because COMIKET loomed large on the horizon. But that's a story for after my lunch break.
