In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, creator, episode, or it could be your fandom friends. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

For this challenge, I am penning a love letter to Uptight Protectors. I love these characters so. Damn. Much. Few things bring me as much joy as watching a regimented, lawful good-type goody two-shoes respond to his charge's informality/impropriety/rule-bending/chaotic alignment/poor pedigree (or whatever it is that offends their sensibilities) with self-righteous, judgmental horror, only to undergo a slow, systematic, apocalyptic meltdown of everything they thought they were or believed was true, and come out other end ready to lay down their life to defend their charge against all comers. Think Deret Beshelar and his "Monstrous!" Rasaad yn Bashir losing his shit beneath Dragonspear Castle. Joscelin Verreuil penned in a dog kennel. Costis.

I love Uptight Defenders and I will always be on board to watch them go through the wringer.

What a fun letter! Yes, the Uptight Protector is so much fun, in any fandom! Watching them change so they can protect another is a wonderful experience!

Beshelar is from Katherine Addison's The Goblin Emperor, which I highly recommend if you haven't read it yet. Joscelin is from Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Dart and salvaged the book for me. And Rasaad is an NPC in the enhanced editions of Baldur's Gate. (Think grown up Aang, if you're an Avatar fan.)

And yes, All The Love for Costis, always.

I used to read a lot of fantasy at one time, and then I didn't read any for years, and now I'm catching up with it (a bit) again. Kushiel's Dart was one of the books that was recommended to me in the years I wasn't reading fantasy, so that accounts for that one. I will definitely check out The Goblin Emperor!

Several of my friends were very much into Kushiel right when it came out, so I knew enough about it to know that it was just this close to matching some of my dearest tastes and tropes without actually doing so that I knew it would be a frustrating read in some ways--and it was--but again, Joscelin made up for that in the end. XD

And I do hope you read TGE--it has a small but very active and enthusiastic fandom, with great writers and commenters both.

"Oh! Proto-Beshelar," I thought when Carey introduced his character before Phedre went on that assignation... The introduction of his character is basically what kept me reading. ;)

Excellent! They're from the novels The Goblin Emperor (Beshelar), Kushiel's Dart (Joscelin), and the Queen's Thief series (Costis), and the enhanced edition of the Baldur's Gate games. They're all fantastic pieces of canon--if you try them out, I hope you like them too!

At first I thought 'Uptight Protectors' was a fandom, and I was going, wow, this sounds like so many characters I'm familiar with, lol! *head desk* All to say that this letter resonated with me. *g*

😂 Now I really want an "Uptight Protectors" anime that just goes all-in on the trope in the most ridiculous ways...
