The mind will take strange twists and turns, sometimes.
I have fallen victim to a fascination with Silver Diamond that runs both deep and true. I suppose this is the downside to being involved with a series as it unfolds - there isn't any backstory to work your way through, and so each month's installment is it for the next thirty days.
But anyway, about my Silver Diamond fixation. I was thinking about the series, and fanfic, and Rakan, and how Rakan, being a Japanese high school student, is learning English. Seeing as Rakan has an extremely majimena personality, he's most likely good at English, at least compared to the standard set by the typical Japanese student.
Then I got to thinking that Rakan's high school probably has an ALT. I thought that this might be an interesting POV from which to write once there is enough backstory to write fiction with, but one which would probably tread a very thin line between 'interesting POV' and 'blatant self-insertion.'
And then I realised that even if did turn into the latter, it would be the most boring self-insertion story known to humankind:
Rakan: Chigusa, Narushige, what are you doing? How many times have I told you you aren't allowed on school grounds? And don't give me that crap about being a Sanome; I've heard it all before.
Anyway, today's Saturday, so I'll only be in class until noon.
(Cue grumbling from Chigusa and Significant Looks from Narushige as Rakan heads to class.)
Random Female Student: Rakan! Come talk to us!
Rakan: Can't. I want to review Program 11 once more before English starts. I don't want to have bad pronunciation. If the ALT is there, it would be really embarrassing.
Random Female Student: We have an ALT?
Second Random Female Student: I don't... think we do...
(To Random Male Student): Himeno-kun, do we have an ALT?
Random Male Student: Erm... I saw a gaijin in the staffroom once. Does that count?
Random Female Student: Come to think of it, I think I might have seen one at the opening ceremony too, but I'll be damned if I can remember her ever teaching one of our classes.
Rakan: No! We have an ALT! I swear!
Random Male Student: Rakan? Remember that one time in independent study when you said you saw some strange guy on the balcony, and there was no one there? This is kind of like that time.
Random Female Student Chatter Chorus: Rakan, you're so cuuuuuute!
ALT: Wow. I wish I had something to do today, now that all my classes have been cancelled. Again.
