It was the best of times, it was the worst of times
The worst of times. I woke up at 6:30 Saturday morning and ran errands until 11:30 when, feeling highly virtuous, I got into my car to begin the first of the long weekend's slate of fun activities. Then I sneezed and DESCENDED DIRECTLY INTO A LIVING HELL.
Namely, a herniated disc. I do not exaggerate when I say I did not realize the human body could register pain of this magnitude. It hurt so badly I was trapped in my car because I was physically unable to open the door to get out. Four hours and a harrowing combination of public transit and taxis later (because the closest urgent care center that accepts my insurance and is open on holiday weekends is in another goddamn state) I was sent home with painkillers and muscle relaxants, which I was told would knock me out. And they did, until pain woke me up again--22 minutes later and well before I could take additional medication. So that has been uniformly horrible.
The best of times. Being housebound, but without the enervation of an illness, I've spent a lot of time reading and Interneting. Thanks to
i_am_zan's reminder, I finally backed my LJs up...
...and discovered the URL--that I've spent an eternity try to recall--to my pre-LJ blog. The majority of which was crawled by the Wayback Machine. Including the complete Vampire Chronicles fic I was whimpering about here. Including several Saiyuki, XF, and HP fics I had forgotten I had written. Including an XF fic by
metal_dog5 and a Koori fic by HazardBlue. (Alas, the three Snape FQF fics weren't crawled, but could they still be out there somewhere else?) Including the majority of my blog archives. Fifteen-years-ago me was kind of an asshole, but damn did I have some good web design skills.
Seriously, guys, I could not be more tickled to have located this stuff again. And you best believe I've downloaded the lot of it to my computer.

I did that a few years ago, and luckily for me, the ER doc had ALSO herniated a disc a few years before, and said the single most helpful thing anyone has ever said about it, so I share:
You WILL get better. It may not feel like it, it may heal much more slowly than you think it should, but you will get better.
(Also, personally, I totes recommend the oral steroids, if warranted, notwithstanding the miserable side effects.)

They did prescribe steroids, which make me woozy and dry-mouthed, but they are indeed helping. And thank you for passing on the doc's words too--very helpful to hear indeed!

Yay for you finding your old blog & fic. :D

And yeah, it's kinda crazy to think the WayBack Machine picked it up at all, given how few people probably ever read it. But there it was!
