Apparently what happened is that the tenant above us put a bunch of bad stuff down their disposal and just kept running it...even after it flooded their apartment. (They apparently didn't want to let maintenance in to fix it? Which boggles my mind: Having someone else be responsible for doing repairs is the benefit to renting, IMO.)

But yes, agreed, why would you put those things so close together?!
