I'll definitely have Seraphina thoughts for next Wednesday. My daily time allotment for DW ran out before I finished writing them all down. (Oops.) But in short, I really, really liked it! It felt very Megan Whalen Turner- and Katherine Addison-esque to me, in many ways, and I wish I'd read it sooner!
I absolutely do think Grief, Witness, and the unnamed third volume were broken up for that purpose. The first two together are as long as TGE but cost twice as much. On the one hand, I really begrudge Tor for this: I have a budget. On the other hand, I love Addison's books and don't begrudge giving money to her. So I guess it's a wash.
And that's what I found so frustrating about Upright Women! If it had been a full-length novel that dealt with the protagonist's grief, and how she overcomes it and comes to care for someone else, it would have been so satisfying. It's such a huge missed opportunity, which makes it more disappointing than if it had just been plain bad and that potential had never been there to begin with.
