Arakawa is a lot more kill-happy with the characters than most shounen mangka.

I know, and I adore him for it as much as I hate it, because honestly? An author who's willing to kill beloved characters regularly, remorselessly, and without sentimentality or buildup, is an author who creates great dramatic tension in his story.
