I threw stuff out today. Trust me when I say that's kind of a big deal. I've been trying to divest myself of things and clutter lately, little objects I don't need or anticipate any use for.

There were a lot of twisty-ties tossed out today. Wrappers, tins, boxes, papers. Some minor reorganization and consolidation that shouldn't have needed to take place, strictly speaking, but it wasn't until now I had any feeling or motivation. I don't believe in a lot of the how-to philosophy behind this sort of thing - I tend to stand behind the relentlessly practical approach - but recognizing it wasn't doing anything for me to have the stuff around helped a lot. Looking at a jar and anticipating putting lemonade in it's different than looking at a rubber band and just wondering where to toss it. And now I've got a little breathing room on my table that I hope to expand upon, and might even tackle the rug in the next couple weeks.

I'm writing a fic right now that's somewhat challenging in its characterization, and it got me thinking: how do you tackle characters dealing with emotions or reacting to situations they've never come close to encountering in canon? Or them consciously choosing to change who they are as a person?

For me, my fic is a Riverdale/Archie Comics fic for the FP Jones/Kevin Keller pairing called "Second Time Around." It has FP Jones, a rough and tough gang leader in canon, now trying to step up in his role as a newly single parent, as well as trying act more like a gentleman in order to convince Kevin Keller to stay with him. It can get difficult, because the situation in itself requires FP to change from how he is in canon into someone who's more gentle and caring, so it can very easily stretch the willing suspension of disbelief.

And now I'm curious! How do you, as a writer, believably keep a character as themselves while writing about them acting differently than how they are in canon, or willingly choosing to act unlike themselves?

Since we're at the last post for the month, it's time for list revision. You are free to look over your list and remove anything that you've realized isn't working for you. There is nothing wrong with keeping all your bunnies, of course, but it is also okay to let go. We all grow and change and moving on is a thing that happens.

This is also a weekly check-in! You do not have to check in, of course, but if you would like to comment on the last week, feel free!

Deadlines! I always offer to give deadlines and I mean it! The few times I've given deadlines to people, I've put a sticky note up on the wall by my desk and done a couple PMs as reminders. Other options include a sticky 'deadlines!' post on the community if members would be comfortable with that. (Or any combination of things...)

Do you have something you think you'd be more motivated to work on if you had a deadline for it?

If so, mention it in your comment, when you'd like your deadline to be (or I can pick something), and how you'd prefer it to be administered (community sticky, private PMs/sticky note, other, all of the above?), etc. There would, of course, be no penalty or guilt if the deadline doesn't happen. It's a hectic time of year for a lot of people and I only want to offer gentle nudges in the rear, not stress.

15 -- what is your favorite harem anime?

Oh, I have so many smart-ass answers for this... I've seen some of the classic 'harem' series - Love Hina, Tenchi Muyo, etc. And a lot of reverse-harem shows, too, which might be a later question?

I'm not sure Kyou Kara Maou counts in either direction, but it springs to mind. *laughs* Also Angelique, Pretear, Hakuoki... I definitely have acquired a lot of 'pretty boy love interests galore!' shows. *laughs more*

Tenchi probably has had the most influence on me, but I know it's a series that hasn't necessarily aged well. ^^;; Any remaining art for Kalloway (the character) shows a strong resemblance to Ryoko and that's not accidental.

Why does it always rain on garbage day Thursdays? Specifically, why does it rain the Thursdays for garden waste, with rows of menhir-sized paper bags dissolving in the downpour?

Said prematurely to the s-i-l that I hadn't seen any raccoons in the cherry tree this year. Turns out they're on my s-i-l's 2nd floor balcony, as I discovered about midnight last night with bumps and squeaks and two doors up shining flashlights to locate them. Family of five or six who were first holed up on two doors' up front porch, where Mrs.Prof nearly stepped on them. Next door having decided to go to the cottage, they put their garbage out early- the fools- and the first bump I heard was the raccoons going through their green bin. Is why I was scooping up coffee grounds in the rain at midnight. Also why I was splashing ammonia on next door's balcony and spraying Critter Ridder on the trellising leading down. While I dislike getting up early to unhook the necessary bungie cords and put the green bins out, it is, on balance, better than rebagging rotting garbage in the dark or inviting raccoons to feast in the first place.

Government in its wisdom has reduced my income supplement by 180 a month, which is sad. Of course last year it increased it by 280 so I'm still better off than in 2016. Still can't understand their math because the announcement said my annual income is a third of what my tax return said and half what the rebate guys said. Ah well. Gov gives and gov takes away... Wish the gov would get around to giving us the bandit-proof grren bins other neighbourhoods already have.

Accommodations: still searching for an acquaintance whose couch to crash on. (Don't worry overmuch, I have like 5 billion of them, and if all else fails, I have a cousin who lives there.)

Schedule: ahahahaha... KonOpas doesn't seem to work, sigh. I can select stuffs, but it doesn't sync with Firefox. *grumbles* I suppose I'll just have to export it to my google calendar. (And by "export it", I mean "export everything even vaguely interesting", because I want to have options re: panels, and who needs food breaks ahahaha lolsob.)

I think I'll buy a notebook and write down a schedule and take notes from the interesting panels. I'm going to Fantasies of Free Movement at 12 on Wednesday and have nothing at 13, so if anyone wants to meet and grab a late lunch, that's one possibility.

(The con guide is here. It's 100% OK to inquire as to whether I'm going to a particular panel. I've seen Mark Halmagiu's "To Boldly No: Realism in Space Sci-Fi" last year, and can heartily recommend it to all interested parties.)

EDIT: Okay I figured out how to get sustainable links. Still can't get the import into Google Calendars to work, but the list of things I'm preliminarily interested in is here. Mostly, stuff that tickles my fancy. See you at at least some of them?
Suppose you are going to be marooned on a desert isle (or in my case, a long uncomfortable flight with long layovers.)

What are your long form fic classics that you could not live without, that you would download before the internet blew up?

Any fandom, any pairing!

So far, I've got:

Every Marine a WolfBrother
A Deeper Season
Motion Practice
Leave No Soul Behind

All recs welcome!

Not a day off- had to go in for an hour this morning which but-of-course screwed up my sleeping. But after that I took myself down to the Art Gallery and caught the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit after buying myself a membership which will pay for itself in four visits.

It was a tad too crowded for comfortable viewing: nothing like the terracotta warriors, but those guys were up on plinths and nobody much was trying to read the plaques on the other stuff. This crowd was elderly with canes and wheelchairs, or middle-aged with avoirdupois, so I didn't get to see as much information as I might. Not that it matters. I like houses in my art and when O'Keeffe did those they were very nearly abstract, like that famous patio door which in the paintings hangs above the ground like a black window to nowhere.

So I'm left with flowers that look sexual to me if not to her, and landscapes that relate to nothing I know. Except that her hills look like meat, or liver, or like that dead thing in Dali's Persistence of Memory. Intriguing but disquieting.

14 -- what is your favorite action anime?

How the fuck are we actually defining this? This is like 95% of what I watch...

You know what... since I haven't had a chance to really talk about it yet, let's go with Kiddy Grade. I adore Kiddy Grade, a fact that usually confuses anyone who is peripherally aware of the series but hasn't actually seen the whole thing. But Kiddy Grade is basically everything I like in anime, rolled into one. Action, drama, intrigue, pretty girls, pretty boys, robots, space fighting, humor, plenty of UST, amazing amounts of room for poking at the universe, etc. It is basically my anime happy place. ^_^

In these dark times, a little joy can go a long way: The Toast is back for a one-day spectacular. (It's spectacular because they're back. And it's one day of posts just like in the old days, except without the comments...)

Things Read
Finally started Harbors of the Sun, the last Raksura novel, and I'm really enjoying the sweet interpersonal stuff and the fast-paced adventure that's the plot. Love Martha Wells' boundless imagination and fantastic world building.

Things Watched
We watched Kingsman this weekend, and it was the perfect movie for a Friday night with pizza and beer.

Just started Little Witch Academia which seems quite enjoyable - a show about girls! Without any boys at all! And so far a total of 0 panty shots?! Color me pleasantly surprised.

Twin Peaks: The Return blows my mind every single week and episode 11 was one of my favorites in a series that has been thoroughly outstanding.

Was home alone without Skuld for an evening, and checked out Saiyuki: Reload Blast, and it pretty much overwhelmed me with nostalgia. I have so many memories of the Saiyuki fandom both online and in Japan, and it's so bittersweet to have a new season now in 2017. (That's. Uh. ...14 years after I got in to it?)

Future Things
After I finish Harbors of the Sun there's other new releases to catch up on - like Megan Whalen Turner's Thick as Thieves. But I haven't settled on anything yet. The way the world is going, maybe I'll just re-read all of Yotsuba&! and Chi's Sweet Home. :/

A few questions:

  1. Last year, we allowed gen relationships, pairings, or teams in the relationships field. Did this work for everyone? I would like to keep the No Characters/No Relationships method of requests/offers this year as it enabled better automated matching.
  2. Because crossover nominations or umbrella fandom nominating will both be permitted this year, it will be possible to request crossovers between different parts of the multiverse without having multiple fandoms per request. Does anyone want to be able to request multiple fandoms at once?
  3. Do you also want to be able to nominate a crossover character under a different canon than source canon? I'm up for this if the character is a canonical Marvel character from a different timeline.

And a few definite changes:

  1. This year we will allow crossover nominations. You can nominate crossover relationships with disambiguated source fandom in parenthesis, e.g. Clint Barton (616)/Natasha Romanov (MCU) under either character's fandom. You do not have to nominate both canons, but if the second canon ends up nominated by someone else, the crossover pairing may appear under both.
  2. This year I will not require cape names to be specified in nominations but will allow it if a participant wants more specificity. Hunting down participants to fix their noms was painful.

Added a 5-week writing time version: http://marvelismarvel.dreamwidth.org/9229.html

Not sure I like it better, but I found moving it out didn't work well and that's very much as far as I can move it back. Stuck between a move and a Yuletide. Which do potential participants like better?
